- Harsanyi: Must love cars
The Denver Post, July 2
It was only when my editors asked me to contribute a few thoughts for a July 4th feature called "Why I Love America" that it occurred to me that most of the things I admire about the country are frowned upon these days: Individualism. Commercialism. Capitalism. Sprawl. And so on.

The New York Times, June 30
President Obama leveled a harsh indictment against Congressional Republicans on Wednesday, accusing them of doing the bidding of bankers and oil executives while cutting “working folks loose to fend for themselves.”
- Has the U.S. economy hit the brakes?
Detroit Free Press, July 2
Today's U.S. jobs report will be closely examined by Detroit's auto industry and others as another indication of whether the nation's recovery has gone off track after a recent wave of disappointing economic data -- including weak U.S. car and truck sales in June.

REMINDER: STATE DAILY FEE ON CAR "RENTALS" / LOANERS: APPLIES TO WARRANTY WORK
--Re-run from the July 8, 2009 Open Road--
In the June 24th issue of Open Road, New Daily Fee on Car Rentals Effective July 1st, we provided notice and information about a new, $2.00 daily fee on car rentals. The question has been asked whether this daily fee would apply when the dealer is being reimbursed by the manufacturer or other warranty provider. The answer from the state Department of Revenue is YES – the daily fee applies when there is a charge levied for the rental, and a payment being made, even if it is not the end-consumer.
The guidance issued by the state is that rentals are only exempt if they are “complimentary”. Visit New Daily Fee on Car Rentals Effective July 1st, 2009 (Open Road, 6/24/2009) for more information and the state summary of this new fee.
