ALTERNATIVE FUEL INCOME TAX CREDITS

Colorado allows income tax credits to taxpayers who have purchased an alternative fuel vehicle, converted a motor vehicle to use alternative fuel, or have replaced a vehicle’s power source with an alternative fuel power source. To qualify, the vehicle must be titled and registered in Colorado. [§39-22-516, C.R.S.]

Definition of Alternative Fuel
"Alternative fuel" means compressed natural gas, propane, ethanol, or any mixture of ethanol containing eighty-five percent or more ethanol by volume with gasoline or other fuels, electricity, or any other fuels, which fuels may include, but are not limited to, clean diesel and reformulated gasoline so long as these other fuels make comparable
reductions in carbon monoxide emissions and brown cloud pollutants as determined by the air quality control commission. "Alternative fuel" does not include any fuel product, as defined in section §25-7-139 (3), C.R.S. that contains or is treated with methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE).

The state publication, FYI Income 9 (Rev. 05/2011) provides a detailed summary of these state-level tax credits for specific makes/models.

STEVINSON AUTOMOTIVE'S WELLNESS COMMITTEE DESIGNS NEW EMPLOYEE PROGRAMS

Kent Stevinson, president of Stevinson Automotive, jokes around with some of the Quit Smoking pledgers. So far, 90 people at the company have pledged to quit. Stevinson has offered those employees $500 if they succeed in quitting by January 2012 and a $200 reimbursement for any supplements they purchase to assist them in the process.

Losing weight can help people feel really good. But losing weight with the support of a team and earning cash while doing it takes things to a whole different level.

Kent Stevinson, owner of Stevinson Automotive, said he believes that — which is why he implemented a companywide weight-loss competition that lasted from March to July. “I wanted to lose weight,” Stevinson said. “I put a challenge out to a few people, betting I could lose more than they could.”

The concept proved very popular in his company, drawing participants from employees from all six of his dealerships, with 339 of 550 counting their calories. Participants were randomly divided into teams within dealerships, and those teams competed against each other. In addition, dealerships competed against each other. For example, Stevinson Toyota of Aurora competed against Stevinson Toyota of Lakewood.

Stevinson split a $15,000 reward among members of each winning team in the six dealerships. The three winning dealerships also got a free lunch and trophy.

Katie Cassidy, an employee since October 2002, lost 38 pounds, the most of anyone in the competition.

“It definitely gives you a sense of obligation to not let the rest of your team down,” she said. “It gives you a drive and motivation when there’s an award at the end.”

In 2009, Stevinson said he realized employees wanted to become more active, lose weight and quit smoking. So he established a committee to create and implement ideas to improve wellness.

Stevinson offered employees $175 to participate in an annual Kaiser Permanente age-appropriate medical screening in late 2009, he said. In 2010, he upped the incentive to $200 in an effort in entice more employees to participate. As a result, employee participation increased to 74 percent in 2010 from 55 percent in 2009.

“I want to give our employees every opportunity to know their baselines and monitor them throughout their lives,” he said.

Stevinson also said that he held a “quit smoking” seminar on July 19, where 65 employees attended; 40 have signed pledges to quit by January 2012. Stevinson has offered those employees $500 if they succeed and another $200 reimbursement for any supplements they purchase to assist them.

“I’m so proud of my people I can’t stand it,” Stevinson said. “These are tough changes to make and we have really changed a culture.”
