AUTO INDUSTRY NEWS AT A GLANCE

Listed here are several articles pertaining to the
auto industry in general that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.

…more news articles are included at the end of this issue.

REMINDER: 2012 VERSION OF NHTSA INSURANCE COST BOOKLET NOW REQUIRED
Dealers required to use latest version as of March 30, 2012

The 2012 version of the Relative Collision Insurance Cost Information Booklet produced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was mailed to new vehicle dealers in February.  The latest version should be provided as of March 30, 2012. Pursuant to NHTSA’s Insurance Cost Information Regulation, all new vehicle dealers are required to make available to prospective purchasers this information regarding comparative insurance costs, based on damage susceptibility and crashworthiness, for makes and models of passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, light trucks, and vans.  This mandate has been in effect for over 21 years.

  • Dealers are to maintain a “sufficient quantity” to assure prospective purchasers can retain a copy if requested
  • The booklet provided should include the introduction letter  (the full PDF provided below)
  • There can be no charge to consumers

FUEL ECONOMY GUIDES: SOME REMINDERS AND UPDATES

Similar to the insurance booklet and also a longstanding customer education requirement, dealers must make fuel economy guides available to vehicle shoppers and buyers who request them. Annual guides are available at www.fueleconomy.gov. Dealers may order copies by mail or print online (see the “Info for Auto Dealers” link at the very bottom footer of the main page).

  • The annual fuel cost estimates in the electronic versions of the 2008–2012 fuel economy guides are now updated weekly to match EIA's (U.S. Energy Information Administration) current national average prices for gasoline and diesel fuel.  With gas prices rising, dealers may wish to download the latest version.
  • The 2012 version is 45 pages (up from 37 pages in 2011).
  • To ensure that you will receive a new model year Fuel Economy Guide via e-mail in the future (typically in November), provide your e-mail address by sending an email to: fueleconomy@ornl.gov.
  • The feds have a "Fuel-Saving Tip of the Week" widget that dealers can add to web sites.  Visit: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/drive.shtml
