AUTO INDUSTRY NEWS AT A GLANCE

Listed here are several articles pertaining to the
auto industry in general that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.

…more news articles are included at the end of this issue.

TITLE PROCESSING: STATE ISSUES NEW MAKE ABBREVIATIONS

The state has provided an updated list of vehicle make abbreviations.  With these changes, Colorado will come into compliance with national standards for motor vehicle make abbreviations. The change expands the number of characters to four, as applicable, to meet the national standard.

This change will impact all new Certificates of Title and VIN verifications. Existing records with a three character make will not be impacted until a new title is issued.

There are some vehicles that do not have a 4 digit Vehicle Make code assigned by NCIC. NCIC has provided an unlisted vehicle make for trailers (TRLR) and trucks (TRUK). There is no unlisted code for any other vehicles.  Colorado will be using these general codes until a make is assigned for certain vehicles.

Make abbreviations for motorhomes and motorized vehicles will be found on the vehicle make abbreviation list and non-motorized vehicles such as manufactured homes and trailers will be on the trailer make list.

These lists will be updated as new makes are added and will be posted to the state website: www.colorado.gov/revenue

CADA GRASSROOTS EVENTS

Colorado Primary Election Week 2012

Colorado dealers,

Next week marks an important one in the political life of Colorado government.  Several reliable legislative “friends of auto retailing” are up for re-election and face inner-party primary fights.  At the same time, Colorado dealers recognize that the success of our industry’s legislative agenda is dependent upon the outcome of the elections as well as our highly effective grassroots community and dealer involvement.

There are several events that CADA staff and member dealers will participate in next week and/or in the days and weeks between now and the general election, scheduled for early November.  Please come out if you can to any or all of these:

Tuesday, June 26 – Colorado primary election day

7:30am – Dealer breakfast with Senator Linda Newell at Racine’s
650 Sherman Street, Denver
Note:  Senator Newell sponsored key/priority legislation for Colorado dealers in 2011

12:00pm – House Speaker Frank McNulty provides dealers briefing on key 2012
House races
Earl’s Downtown, 1600 Glenarm, Denver

3:00pm – Briefing by Colorado Chamber (CACI) CEO on 2012 election priorities
CADA, 290 East Speer Blvd, Denver

6:00pm – Congressman Doug Lamborn hosts primary election victory event
Guiseppe's Event Center, 10 South Sierra Street, Colorado Springs, CO

Thursday, June 28

12:00pm – Strategy briefing on how to elect a pro-business Colorado Senate majority
Presented by Former Colorado Governor Bill Owens and Senate leader Bill Cadman
CADA, 290 East Speer Blvd, Denver

THE AFTERFACT

  • Tesla banks on mass-market sales of Model S
    Detroit Free Press, June 23
Tesla Motors started selling the Model S on Friday, an all-electric sedan billed as a mass-market car, but the Silicon Valley automaker will have only one dealership in the Midwest and the car will cost, in most cases, more than twice the price of the Chevrolet Volt.
  • Detroit auto show to start later in January in 2013
    Detroit Free Press, June 22
The North American International Auto Show will mark its 24th anniversary as a global event next January, but will start slightly later in the month than it did in recent years.
  • Toyota Prius c: Lowercase and Low Priced
The Wall Street Journal, June 23
The newest member of the Prius subspecies is a starved, oppressively dull piece of motorized martyrdom, says Dan Neil.
  • Light Cars Are Heavyweights in Japan
The Wall Street Journal, June 25
While Japan's domestic auto sales are about half their high of 1990, one car category is on its way to doubling its market share since then.
  • Honda: U.S. Recovery on Track
The Wall Street Journal, June 22
Honda Motor Co.'s deputy chief of global sales said Friday that the auto maker will recover its unsteady footing in the U.S. market "in one swift stroke" based on a fresher vehicle line-up, including a new Accord sedan due out this fall.
  • Porsche Seeks Quick Sale of Sports-Car Unit
The Wall Street Journal, June 25
Porsche Automobil Holding SE Monday said it wants to complete the sale of the remaining 50.1% stake in its sports-car business to Volkswagen AG as quickly as possible, brushing aside criticism that a tax-free deal before August 2014 would be bad for German tax payers.
