AUTO INDUSTRY NEWS AT A GLANCE

Listed here are several articles pertaining to the
auto industry in general that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.

…more news articles are included at the end of this issue.

MOTOR VEHICLE DEALER BOARD - NEW MEMBERS APPOINTED

New members were appointed to the Motor Vehicle Dealer Board (“Board”) and started their three-year term on July 17th.  John Medved who just left the board had served as the most recent President.  Beau Smith of Sill-TerHar Motors has been selected as the new President, and Joe Gebhardt of Davidson-Gebhardt Chevrolet Subaru of Loveland is the other new vehicle dealer member currently serving.  We extend a sincere thank you to all members of the Dealer board for their time, energy, and commitment.

John Schenden – Pro Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Thornton
New Motor Vehicle Dealer to replace John Medved

Stan Martin – Stan’s Auto Sales, Westminster
Used Motor Vehicle Dealer to replace Phil Harris

Chris Hefty – Attorney, Loveland
Public Member to replace Eva Wilson

As a re-cap, the Board consists of nine members -- three new vehicle dealers, three used vehicle dealers, and three public members.  Dealer board positions expire June 30th of each year.  The Board oversees and provides direction to the Auto Industry Division. The Board is vested by statute with responsibility to administer the motor vehicle licensing laws, promulgate rules and regulations relating to those laws, to investigate complaints, and to impose sanctions and discipline licensees who violate those laws.

Interested in Serving on the Dealer Board – Or Other State Board?
In addition to the Dealer Board, the Governor’s office must make appointments to over 200 boards and commissions that oversee a large variety of subjects and make wide-ranging decisions.  They are always looking for qualified candidates.  Visit the Governor’s Boards and Commissions page for the 2012 Boards and Commissions Book for a listing of all of the boards and commissions.   An application form is available on that site.

HOUSE PASSES BILL TO REPEAL OBSOLETE MANDATE ON DEALERSHIPS
NADA 60-Second Email, July 23, 2012

On Monday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed by voice vote an NADA-supported bipartisan bill, H.R. 5859, which would repeal an obsolete provision regarding insurance cost reporting. The legislation was introduced in May by Reps. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) and Bill Owens (D-N.Y.) and passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee by voice vote in June.

The bill repeals a requirement that dealers make available a NHTSA booklet entitled “Relative Collision Insurance Cost Information.” Under current law, auto dealers are required to provide the booklet to prospective purchasers upon request or face penalties of $1,000 per violation. However, a recent NADA survey of 815 auto dealers revealed that for 96 percent of dealers no customer had ever asked to see the insurance cost booklet.

NADA commends Reps. Harper and Owens for their bipartisan leadership on this legislation, and will be seeking Senators to sponsor a companion bill.

Also, NADA plans to identify and repeal other outdated mandates. Please advise the Legislative Affairs office if you have any suggestions.

Don Chalmers
Chairman, Government Relations Committee
