Beau Smith of Sill-TerHar Motors has been selected as the new President, and Joe Gebhardt of Davidson-Gebhardt Chevrolet Subaru of Loveland is the other new vehicle dealer member currently serving. In addition to the Dealer Board, the Governor’s office must make appointments to over 200 boards and commissions that oversee a large variety of subjects and make wide-ranging decisions. They are always looking for qualified candidates. Visit the Governor’s Boards and Commissions page for the 2012 Boards and Commissions Book for a listing of all of the boards and commissions. HOUSE PASSES BILL TO REPEAL OBSOLETE MANDATE ON DEALERSHIPS
NADA 60-Second Email, July 23, 2012
On Monday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed by voice vote an NADA-supported bipartisan bill, H.R. 5859, which would repeal an obsolete provision regarding insurance cost reporting. The legislation was introduced in May by Reps. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) and Bill Owens (D-N.Y.) and passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee by voice vote in June.
The bill repeals a requirement that dealers make available a NHTSA booklet entitled “Relative Collision Insurance Cost Information.” Under current law, auto dealers are required to provide the booklet to prospective purchasers upon request or face penalties of $1,000 per violation. However, a recent NADA survey of 815 auto dealers revealed that for 96 percent of dealers no customer had ever asked to see the insurance cost booklet.
NADA commends Reps. Harper and Owens for their bipartisan leadership on this legislation, and will be seeking Senators to sponsor a companion bill.
Also, NADA plans to identify and repeal other outdated mandates. Please advise the Legislative Affairs office if you have any suggestions.
Don Chalmers
Chairman, Government Relations Committee
