AUTO INDUSTRY NEWS AT A GLANCE

Listed here are several articles pertaining to the auto industry in general that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.

…more news articles are included at the end of this issue.

VEHICLES ABANDONED AT REPAIR SHOPS - STATE CHECKLIST OUTLINES PROCESS

The State Titles & Registration Division has a detailed checklist of the steps required when a vehicle is abandoned at a dealer repair shop.  This is a question received on a fairly regular basis by CADA, and often by the time the question is posed, the vehicle has been sitting around for many months as no one is sure what to do.  After identifying any lien-holders and providing the proper notice along with several other steps, a dealer does have the right to obtain title in order to sell the vehicle and cover any storage costs and/or repairs completed.   A vehicle can be considered abandoned within 5 working days of the last good faith effort to contact:

“A vehicle is considered abandoned at a repair shop when the owner or owner’s agent has refused to authorize repairs, has refused to remove the vehicle from the repair shop upon request, or has refused to pay for authorized and completed repairs to the vehicle. The owner or owner’s agent shall be deemed to have refused to grant authorization, make payment, or remove the motor vehicle 5 working days following the repair shop’s last good faith effort to contact the owner or owner’s agent.

The Abandoned Vehicle title application process is outlined in the DR 2542 checklist (latest revision 12/19/2011) provides an overview of the steps and notice requirements necessary.   The key steps are outlined below:

  1. Obtain a certified VIN inspection
  2. Perform a title record search
  3. If there is prior salvage history, additional steps are required
  4. Sent a notice letter to all owners of record and to any lienholders
  5. Establish the Fair Market Value (15 days or more after the vehicle is abandoned)
  6. Obtain a surety bond
  7. Complete a Mechanic and Storage Lien Bond Statement form (DR2438)
  8. Provide a copy of any estimates provided
  9. Apply for a title in the dealership’s county – 30 days or more after the notice letter postmark date

BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL RETURN-TO-WORK PROGRAM
Safety Group Newsletter Article - August 2013
a

Below are excerpts; CLICK HERE for the complete article.
Accidents happen … that’s the reason you have workers’ compensation coverage. Having a strong safety program will keep on-the-job injuries to a minimum. But when injuries occur — and they will — it is important to have a return-to-work program in place. A return-to-work program is a proactive process used by an employer to help employees who have suffered work-related injuries or illnesses return to their previous economic, social and vocational status. From the employers’ standpoint, a return-to-work program can:

  • Speed your injured workers’ medical recovery
  • Reduce claims costs
  • Hold down your workers’ compensation premiums

Building Your Return-To-Work Program
Regardless of your organization’s size or industry, there are some basic steps to building your return-to-work program.

Step One — Create a written return-to-work policy
Step Two — Create modified-duty task lists
Step Three — Understanding and implementing the modified-duty work offer process

You can learn more about all of the steps — as well as download letter templates — at the Return-to-Work Resources section of  Pinnacol’s website. But again, don’t hesitate to call our return-to-work consultants for assistance.
For questions and help, call a Pinnacol return-to-work consultant at 303.361.4000 or 800.873.7242.
