COLORADO DEALER'S BREAKFAST

HELP CRUSH 1K OLD, HIGH-POLLUTING CARS BY END OF 2013
Thanks to the donations of Colorado new car dealers, the Clear the Air Foundation has crushed and recycled 866 old, high-polluting vehicles. Now the goal of taking a total of 1,000 dirty, high-emitting cars off the road by end of 2013 is within reach.

The Clear the Air Foundation is challenging Colorado’s new car dealers to Crush 1K in the next 15 days. That requires 134 more donated old vehicles by December 31.

Created by the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association, the Clear the Air Foundation reduces pollution by taking old, high-emitting vehicles off the road and sending them to auto recyclers. Proceeds will fund automotive scholarships.

Just set aside low-value cars you’ve received as trade-ins and contact Clear the Air Foundation Program Coordinator George Billings at 303-775-8896 or george.billings@coloradodealers.org.

This campaign is a great opportunity to highlight Colorado auto dealers’ commitment to a healthy and beautiful state.  Please donate old vehicles before the year ends so we can surpass the Crush 1K goal.

COLORADO MINIMUM WAGE ORDER AND IRS MILEAGE RATES
MSEC Hot Topics 12/16/2013

The Colorado Division of Labor and Employment (CDLE) has adopted Minimum Wage Order Number 30, setting a new state minimum wage rate of $8.00 per hour, effective January 1, 2014. Colorado’s Constitution requires the CDLE to adjust the state minimum wage rate annually for inflation based on the Consumer Price Index. The new rate represents a 22-cent-per-hour increase from the 2013 minimum wage of $7.78 per hour. The federal minimum wage, a popular topic of late, has been $7.25 per hour since July 24, 2009. Covered employers must obtain and post a new poster displaying the minimum wage increase beginning January 1, 2014. Minimum Wage Order 30 is available on the CDLE’s website by clicking here, a link to the revised poster is expected soon on this page.

In addition, on December 6, 2013, the Internal Revenue Service issued Notice 2013-80 adjusting the 2014 optional standard mileage rate. The standard mileage rate is used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. Lower gas prices have resulted in a half-cent decrease for the 2014 rate to 56 cents per mile for business miles driven and 23.5 cents per mile for medical, or moving purposes. Taxpayers always have the option of deducting their actual costs rather than using the standard mileage rates option.

JANUARY 1, 2013 SALES TAX RATE CHANGES

The Colorado Department of Revenue – Division of Taxation posts upcoming sales and use tax changes each January 1st and July 1st. Dealerships should be aware of these changes and be on the lookout to ensure the tax database being utilized reflects these changes. There may be a time-lag between the effective date and the update of these data sources. Keep in mind that all self-collected jurisdictions must report and changes are effective on these two dates each year. Home-rule jurisdictions, however, can change at any time, and while many still adhere to these timeframes and report to the state, their changes d not always shown up in this list.

CLICK HERE for a listing of January 1, 2014 Sales Tax Rate Changes

As a reminder, typically within a couple of weeks after these changes are effective, the DR1002 summary of sales/use tax rates is updated. CADA maintains a short-cut to the latest version of this document at the following, which will be updated as soon as the revised listing is available: http://www.coloradodealers.org/DR1002
