AUTO INDUSTRY NEWS AT A GLANCE

Listed here are several articles pertaining to the auto industry in general that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.

…more news articles are included at the end of this issue.

LEGISLATIVE GRASSROOTS MEETINGS

NEW TEMPORARY PERMIT PROCESS: ROLL-OUT SCHEDULE / ADDITIONAL UPDATES

The roll-out schedule for the new temporary permit system, QuickTags, is available on the Department of Revenue (DOR) website (and included below) and the in-person training has started this week.  This roll-out schedule was mailed to all licensed dealers along with a letter from the Department of Revenue on May 16th.    The general plan is as follows:

Dealership Administrators are able to create a user on the QuickTags system anytime starting this week at https://co.quickcartag.com and obtain a PIN#. With the PIN number provided, additional Dealer Administrators and Salespersons (or other employees*) may then also register. On the dates listed below by region, Dealership Administrators for all licensed dealerships verified with Auto Industry Division will be “enabled.” The dealership administrator can then enable/authorize each employee to begin using the system. If you need assistance or support, contact Fairfax Imaging, the vendor providing the QuickTags system: Support Phone#: 844.425.5824

NOTE:  Dealers may begin issuing permits from the new system as of the ‘go-live’ dates below.  These are target dates that DOR would like dealers in each region to meet as quickly as possible.  By statute, all temporary permits must be issued from the new system as of July 1st.

See last week’s article for additional updates on this roll-out (*including that ANY dealership employee can register as a “Salesperson” to issue temporary permits – this function is not limited to only salespersons even though the software currently refers to “salespersons.”)

FEDERATED INSURANCE: AUTO DEALER CLAIM OF THE MONTH

Federated Insurance’s “Claim of the Month” – Could it happen to you?

A dealership gave a loaner vehicle to a customer while the customer’s personal vehicle was being serviced. While driving three friends home from a party, the customer rolled the vehicle. Two passengers died, a third was injured. The deceased passengers’ estates and the injured passenger made valid injury claims against the dealership, because the driver was a permissive user of the loaner vehicle. A loaner agreement was signed, but insurance was not checked. The customer had no insurance.

CLAIM AMOUNT: $4.25 million

What policies are in place to help prevent this from happening at your dealership? Do you know who’s driving your vehicles? Federated recommends several best practices to help protect your business and manage risks; for example,

  • Obtain copies of the customer’s valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

  • Require the customer to provide proof of liability and physical damage coverage.

  • Examine license and insurance to verify the information matches and neither has expired.

These are just a few loss control recommendations you can use to help protect your dealership. To learn more, contact your local Federated Mutual Insurance Company representative and request a copy of our “Keys to Success” risk management brochure. Federated is recommended by 19 state and national auto dealer associations just like yours for customized insurance programs and value-added risk management services, such as Federated’s Shield Network®, the Risk Management Resource Center, and the Federated Employment Practices Network®. To discover how Federated can help you create or ramp up your own risk management program, or to find your local representative, click here.

DEALER TURNS CHURCH INTO MEDICAL CENTER

The Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic church was built in Trinidad, CO, near the New Mexico border, in 1907 to serve Spanish and Italian immigrants who worked in the area’s coal mines.

But as the mines eventually were spent and Colorado Springs, two hours north, became the region’s focus of development, Trinidad lost jobs and population.

A serious blow came in 1998 when the Diocese of Pueblo closed Mt. Carmel. In the years that followed, the structure began to deteriorate. The roof collapsed under the weight of Colorado snowfalls and its foundation crumbled.

Mt. Carmel’s demise hit Jay Cimino particularly hard. The philanthropic president and CEO of the Phil Long Family of Dealerships had attended Mass there as a young man and traces his family roots for three generations in Trinidad.

ALL THE NEWS THAT'S FIT TO EMAIL!

  • Study: Autonomous car sales to reach 21 million by 2035
    The Detroit News, June 7

The United States will lead the deployment of autonomous vehicles to sales of nearly 21 million globally by 2035, according to a report released Tuesday by IHS Automotive.
  • Intel Targets Autonomous Cars
    Cloud Tweaks, June 6

To the casual observer, Intel may have looked like it was in trouble, after getting rid of nearly 12,000 jobs this year alone and cutting back on many lines of business that they have since deemed unnecessary, but that’s not stopping them from investing in new start ups and getting a foothold in the worlds of IoT and autonomous cars.
