- Toyota denies using government money to develop Prius
Detroit Free Press, April 2
Toyota Motor Corp. denied on Wednesday it had received any funding from the Japanese government to develop its hit Prius gas-electric hybrid car.
- U-Haul ranks Colorado first for inbound moves

U-Haul International Inc., which compiles the list based on moves to and
from states.

IN LONDON, A LEVY FOR SINS OF EMISSION
The mayor has pushed a carbon emissions charge that could cost drivers of gas guzzlers in the central city $50 a day.
Los Angeles Times, April 3
LONDON -- The Hackings, like many of their neighbors, are a two-car family. Every morning, Giles Hacking gets into his Mercedes CL500 in West Kensington and drives to his office across town near London Bridge.
Sarah Hacking piles the three children into the Jeep Cherokee and drops them off at their schools. Often, her mother pitches in and delivers one of the youngsters.
Soon, though, multi-car families like the Hackings may be wishing all they had to contend with was London's $8-a-gallon gasoline. In an unusual municipal experiment aimed at fighting global warming where the rubber meets the road, the British capital in October is to begin imposing a $50-a-day carbon emissions fee on every gas-guzzling private vehicle driven in the central city.

NEW RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT FOR USED-VEHICLE IMPORTS TO MEXICO
Last month, Mexico imposed tighter restrictions on used vehicle imports. Specifically, until January 2009, no one may import vehicles older than 10 years. This amends a preexisting import restriction allowing only the importation of vehicles between 10 and 15 years old. Bottom line: Until January 2009, used vehicles imported into Mexico from the U.S. or Canada may only be 10 years old (MY 1998). Moreover, they are subject to Mexican Standard NOM 041 on maximum permissible emissions and the importer must pay a 15 percent value-added tax.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2009, Mexico will no longer restrict used-vehicle imports at least 10 years old from the U.S. or Canada. CLICK HERE for the full market research report from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

CADA-SPONSORED HIGH SCHOOL TEAM
RANKS 13TH AT NATIONAL COMPETITION
CADA recently sponsored Smokey Hill High School’s automotive teacher Brian Manley and two students, Steven Olivias and Nicholas Saladin, in the 2008 National Automotive Technology Competition. This was the first time CADA ever sponsored a group for this competition, and Team Lexus placed 13th at the national GNYADA contest (team names are based on a random drawing).
"I was thrilled when I found out our placing, because we were up against teams who had been here before, knew the contest format, and had days, or even weeks, with their contest vehicle" said Manley. "I believe this is an excellent showing for newcomers."
The Smokey Hill students competed in 10 stations for 15 minutes each, including precision measuring, wire harness repair, electrical circuits, scope waveform interpretation, road force wheel balancing, TPMS monitors, environmental health & safety, information access, brake measuring, and 4-stroke engine diagnosis. They were then judged on technique and overall knowledge and ability.
"The students were faced with multiple powertrain codes, and had to locate and diagnose a defective MAF sensor, immobilizer system, purge system, power door locks and speaker inop, and no power to ALL of the ignition coils," reports Manley. "A defective horn, bad blower transistor and full PDI rounded out the bugs they found. They feel as though they got almost all of them--great diagnosing under pressure."

LOVELAND DEALER AND SONS TO RIDE FOR ROTARY
For the next three summers, Ryan Ferrero and his two sons will take a 1,000-mile bike ride across the United States to support the Loveland Rotary Club. Ferrero, owner of Ferrero I-25 Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Loveland, Riley, 9, and Dylan, 7, will ride on a Pino Tour tandem hybrid bike for this event.
Ridin' for Rotary is a charitable ride to support their dictionary project, with a goal of more than $5,000. The purpose of this bike ride is for every 3rd grader in the Thompson R2-J School District to receive a dictionary courtesy of the Loveland Rotary Club.
Between June 19 and July 3, 2008, the three "boys" will be dipping the traditional rear-tire in the Pacific in Astoria, Oregon. Then the Ferreros will ride a self-supported 800-mile solo tour through the Oregon Cascade Mountain Range through Boise, completing their first of three legs in Sun Valley, Idaho. Summer 2009 and 2010 will complete the journey in Washington DC where the front wheel will be dipped in the Atlantic.
"We will raise money to ensure that every 3rd grader receives the New Heritage full-color hard-backed dictionary," said Ryan.
