AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AT A GLANCE
Listed here are several articles pertaining to the auto industry in general that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.
- Car sellers' building plans signal optimism
Colorado Springs Gazette, May 17
Nine auto dealers are planning
major construction projects in Colorado Springs, bringing new jobs to the beleaguered building industry and more choices for car buyers in the
next year.
- Schwarzenegger, automakers
at odds
USA Today, May 8
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Thursday that pressure from the auto industry will not deter California from attempting to impose strict emission rules for vehicles sold in the state.
- A secret cheer for gas prices
The Washington Post, May 18
Largely thanks to government mandates and rising fuel prices, the green revolution is revving up in the global automobile industry.
Gas prices may spur revision of mpg plan
The Detroit News, May 17
U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said Friday the final regulation increasing fuel efficiency standards could be tougher than the department's initial proposal.
- Scientist changes views on global warming
AOLNews.com, May 18
Global warming isn't to blame for the recent jump in hurricanes in the Atlantic, concludes a study by a prominent federal scientist whose position has shifted on the subject.
- Hybrids gain fans as gas cost rises
Detroit Free Press, May 15
Rising fuel prices and competition among a proliferation of gasoline-electric hybrids have sliced the payback period for hybrids to two or three years in some cases, instead of five years or more that made hybrids harder to justify at lower fuel prices.
- Obama’s rusty image of Detroit 3 needs polish
Detroit Free Press, May 18
Sen. Barack Obama extended an olive branch to Detroit's automakers last week. Unfortunately, he extended it to the Detroit Three of the 1980s, not the 21st-Century companies doing business here today.
- Easy or not, Mac vows to be green
New York Post, May 13
Promising to be a "green" president, John McCain yesterday unveiled a plan to combat global warming - and took a shot at President Bush for not tackling the issue.
Nissan sews a deal on battery technology
AOLNews.com, May 18
Nissan says its joint venture with electronics maker NEC Corp. will invest 12 billion yen to start mass-producing lithium-ion batteries -- a technology that's widely viewed as key for next-generation green cars.
- 2 automakers hit milestones
Detroit Free Press, May 16
General Motors Corp. said sales in April pushed the Chevrolet brand past 500,000 units in China, where the brand was introduced in 2000, and Toyota Motor Corp. said it has now sold more than 1 million Prius gas-electric hybrids. Toyota started selling the model in Japan in 1997.

SENATE TO TAKE UP CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS BILL NEXT WEEK
The Detroit News, May 14
The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee plans to take up a bill next week that would grant California and 16 other states the power to impose their own vehicle emissions standards.
The bill, before the committee chaired by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., would reverse a decision by the Environmental Protection Agency that denied California and the other states the right to mandate a 30 percent cut in vehicle emissions by 2016. Natalie Ravitz, a Boxer spokeswoman, said the bill could come up as early as Tuesday.
