AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AT A GLANCE
Listed here are several articles pertaining to the
auto industry in general that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.
- Exxon Mobil posts biggest US quarterly profit ever

9News.com, November 3
Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM), the world's largest publicly traded oil company, reported income Thursday that shattered its own record for the biggest profit from operations by a U.S. corporation, earning $14.83 billion in the third quarter.
- Consultant: GM-Chrysler deal possible by Tuesday
Detroit Free Press, October 30
There is a chance that there could be an agreement between General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC by Tuesday that would result in half of Chrysler’s assembly plants closing and 24,000 lost jobs, Kimberly Rodriguez, principal of Grant Thornton’s automotive practice, said today.
- Are automakers also too big to fail?
The Christian Science Monitor, November 3
In a financial scenario that probably sounds all too familiar to Uncle Sam, the auto industry is declaring itself too important – with hundreds of thousands of workers – for the government to allow it to fail.
- Sen. Levin: Government help needed to preserve auto jobs
The Detroit News, October 30
The auto industry will lose more jobs unless the federal government provides much-needed loans, U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Detroit, said here today.
- Being Green vs. Quality Time With the Family
The Wall Street Journal, October 28
While sitting on the very delayed train last week I was chatting with a friend and juggler about commuting and the atrocities of N.J. Transit.
- Kerkorian sells 26.4 million Ford shares
The Detroit News, October 28
Billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian may still be Ford Motor Co.'s largest private shareholder, but he is no longer obligated to talk about it.
- Bankruptcy Fears Rise As Chrysler, GM Seek Federal Aid
The Wall Street Journal, October 27
As talks between General Motors Corp. and long-time rival Chrysler LLC continued over the weekend, a harsh reality has emerged: Without a merger and possibly an assist from the federal government, two of Detroit's Big Three auto makers could run out of cash within a year.
- More Car Dealers Shut Down
The Wall Street Journal, October 28
With credit drying up and new-vehicle sales slumping to a 25-year low, car dealerships from New Jersey to California are going out of business at an accelerating pace, threatening greater economic pain for communities around the country.
- Honda reports 41 percent drop in quarterly profit
The Detroit News, October 28

NADA NEWS
- Individuals and organizations with 25 or more trucks, tractors or other heavy vehicles used on highways are required to make their excise tax filings with the Internal Revenue Service electronically, rather than by paper. Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, is used to report and pay highway-use excise taxes. E-filing of Form 2290 began in August 2007. Electronic filing streamlines the processing of Form 2290. It is safer and more reliable than paper filing and reduces preparation and processing errors. Another advantage of e-filing Form 2290 is that taxpayers don’t have to wait for a stamped version of the Schedule 1, Schedule of Heavy Highway Vehicles, to be returned by mail. They will almost instantly receive the equivalent of a stamped version electronically. For additional information, contact NADA/ATD Regulatory Affairs at mailto:regulatory@nada.org. COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE
The state Department of Revenue has launched a new-and-improved web site. Various URLs you may have previously used to find information from the Auto Industry Division and the Titles and Registration Section may no longer be accessible, or may not point to the most current information. The department has also informed us, they have set up some easy-to-remember short-cuts for their new websites:
Department of Revenue home page www.colorado.gov/revenue
DOR Auto Industry home page www.colorado.gov/revenue/AID
DOR Motor Vehicles home page www.colorado.gov/revenue/dmv
(Titles/Reg’n section link)
DOR Taxation home page www.colorado.gov/revenue/tax
CADA has also updated all of our shortcuts and links on our state compliance pages at: http://www.coloradodealers.org/reg_state.php. The revised look and feel is below:

DEALERSHIP STATE ID-CHECKING REQUIREMENTS
The state Department of Revenue – Titles and Registration section has issued the following reminder regarding Secure and Verifiable ID requirements (SVID):
We have been notified of instances where two Owners are applying for title and both Owners Secure and Verifiable Identifications (SVIDs) are being listed on the DR2395, Application for Title. At this time, the Title Section is not rejecting these applications when both names and IDs are listed. However, only one SVID is required in order to apply for a title. The title application will be rejected if two names are listed in the SVID portion of the DR2395 and only one ID is recorded (due to not knowing which party the ID represents).
SVID Memo, Titles & Registration Section, October 28, 2008
The acceptable types of ID to prove legal presence in order to title or register a car in Colorado are listed on the DR 2841 (latest revision, 09/19/08).
Drivers licenses expired one year or less are acceptable.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Different ID types are acceptable for hiring salespeople:
The acceptable ID types for SVID, which applies to titling and registering motor vehicles, contains a DIFFERENT set of acceptable IDs than those allowed from individuals who receive “public benefits” (which includes a motor vehicle salesperson license). When hiring salespersons, the following are the allowable ID types. While an expired driver’s license IS allowable when checking ID for titling/registering a car, it is NOT allowable for those who will need a Colorado salesperson license.
In addition to a signed affidavit, individuals age 18 years or older applying or reapplying for a public benefit must provide any one the following types of identification with the application:
- A valid Colorado driver's license (includes only a current driver's license; minor driver's license; probationary driver's license, commercial driver's license, restricted driver's license; instruction permit or identification card) or valid Colorado identification card , or
- U.S. military card or military dependent's identification card, or
- U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Card, or
- Native American Tribal Document.

DICK DELLENBACH PASSES AT AGE 90
Simply put, R.W. "Dick" Dellenbach was a great family man, businessman and humanitarian who was always quick to shy away from attention for his efforts, friends and colleagues said.
The father of 11, grandfather of 29, great-grandfather of 15 and long-time owner of Dellenbach Motors in Fort Collins died Friday at the age of 90.
"Dick raised a wonderful family of 11 children and all have done very well and it's just a really, really fine family," said Tom Gleason, former president of First National Bank and a neighbor and business associate of Dellenbach's. "That in itself is a full-time job and yet he was a very successful businessman and had a great sense of humor. His kids are just like him."

NADA 2009 CONVENTION AND EXPOSITION
New Orleans is now the eighth fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. To show support for the rebirth of New Orleans, NADA is headed back to the Big Easy to hold its 92nd annual convention and exposition there Jan. 24-27, 2009.
“The theme for our New Orleans convention is 'Voice of the Dealer® ... Committed to Community.' What better way to show that commitment than for us to be there in full strength at one of NADA's favorite convention cities," said Annette Sykora, 2008 NADA Chairman. NADA has held its convention in New Orleans every few years for the past 30 years.
