AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AT A GLANCE
Listed here are several articles pertaining to the
auto industry in general that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.

DEALERSHIP Q&A: NON-FUNCTIONING ELECTRONIC ODOMETER
Question/Situation: Dealership accepted a car on trade-in with a broken, electronic odometer (the display was not lighting up to provide a legible reading). In obtaining a title denoting “TMU” (True Mileage Unknown) for this vehicle, dealer was informed by county personnel that the odometer must be fixed before the car is sold even to another dealership.
Answer: According to a legal interpretation letter from NHTSA, the dealership does have an obligation to obtain a reading, IF one can be obtained; if the odometer has been destroyed or is “incapable of providing a reading” the proper disclosures must be made. There is not an obligation to fix the odometer before it is wholesaled to another dealership.
“The only circumstance in which the company can transfer ownership without stating the reading on the odometer is if the odometer has been destroyed and is incapable of providing a reading.”
NHTSA Legal Interpretation Letter, 1/13/2000
The states title procedures manual did have some information that was unclear on this topic; the state will clear up this confusion.

FIXED-OPS GROWTH STRATEGIES
Traditional thinking will not bring you new service customers
December 9-11, 2008; Six Sessions Across Colorado!
A thought-provoking, information-packed, business-changing workshop by a highly renowned consultant: Don Tipton has presented for many
state dealer associations and 20-Groups.
IT IS TIME TO CREATE A NEW IMAGE AND FIND INNOVATIVE WAYS TO:
-
Provide service that will drive sales
-
Create an environment that attracts customers…instead of marketing to
drive customers
-
Your service department may be perceived to be “High-Priced” and “Inconvenient”,
especially by customers with older, high mileage, or out of warranty vehicles.
-
Traditional pricing and customer handling procedures tend to reinforce this
perception.
-
Your old performance indicators and benchmarks may be getting in the way
Presented by Don Tipton, President-DTC Retail Consulting, www.dtcretailconsulting.com
Don Tipton, still an active dealership consulltany today, offers "In the Trenches" automotive experience combined with knowledge of proven management techniques. HELP US PICK COLORADO'S "25 MOST POWERFUL SALESPEOPLE"
Joe Girard, the Guinness World Record’s top salesman, sold 13,001 cars (six a day) in 15 years at a Chevy dealership near Detroit. Every month he mailed cards to his customers that read simply, “I Like You.”
– Fortune magazine, September 2008
Who’s the most powerful salesperson in your sphere of business? ColoradoBiz magazine wants your opinion.
Selling acumen is the critical during difficult economic times. Our fifth annual “power issue” in January will profile the state’s “25 Most Powerful Salespeople,” based on nominations from you and other readers. It could be someone who sells FOR you, or someone who sells TO you. Give us your single choice and reasons why.
Sales production counts, of course, but the nominees who make our final top 25 will be those who also display uncommon resourcefulness, tenacity, determination and originality from prospecting to closing in a tough economy.
To increase the chances of your nominee making the Top 25, we ask that you be as specific as possible in citing the reasons for your nomination. Include the nominee’s sales figures in terms of dollar volume or units sold, if possible, or at least discuss his or her sales production relative to peers. Provide anecdotes illustrating the nominee’s resourcefulness, tenacity, background, personal growth, obstacles or other factors you deem relevant to the nomination. For example, what’s the most creative thing a salesperson did to land a meeting and a sale?
E-mail nominations to by Nov. 24 to Editor Mike Cote at mcote@cobizmag.com or Managing Editor Mike Taylor at mtaylor@cobizmag.com

NADA 2009 CONVENTION AND EXPOSITION
New Orleans is now the eighth fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. To show support for the rebirth of New Orleans, NADA is headed back to the Big Easy to hold its 92nd annual convention and exposition there Jan. 24-27, 2009.
“The theme for our New Orleans convention is 'Voice of the Dealer® ... Committed to Community.' What better way to show that commitment than for us to be there in full strength at one of NADA's favorite convention cities," said Annette Sykora, 2008 NADA Chairman. NADA has held its convention in New Orleans every few years for the past 30 years.
