AUTOMOTIVE NEWS AT A GLANCE

Listed here are several articles pertaining to the auto industry that appeared recently in newspapers and other media outlets across the nation.

  • Judge tosses Calif. emissions lawsuit against automakers
    Detroit News, Sept. 18

WASHINGTON -- The Detroit Big Three and Japanese automakers won a court victory Monday in the ongoing battle over vehicle tailpipe emissions and their contributions to global warming.

U.S. District Judge Martin Jenkins on Monday tossed out a California lawsuit that claimed the world's largest automakers should be held accountable for the impact tailpipe emissions were having on the environment. California claimed emissions were causing drought, beach erosion and warmer temperatures.

  • Car-buying spurt helps retail sales
    Associated Press, Sept. 14
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Consumers kept spending in August and factories kept producing, but the gains were weaker than expected as financial market turbulence and a slumping housing market continued to weigh on the economy.

  • DIA surpasses Los Angeles LAX as the nation's 4th busiest airport
    Rocky Mountain News, Sept. 14
DIA edged past its counterpart in Los Angeles, known as LAX, to rank as the nation's fourth-busiest airport from January through June, a testament to its continuing growth.

  • Detroit 3 designs impress Frankfurt
    Detroit Free Press, Sept. 16

It's physically impossible for a single person to see every new car and technology in a show that fills seven buildings, a palatial temporary tent and more floors than the Compuware building.

With that caveat, here are the most intriguing things I did see at Europe's biggest auto show.

  • Charging Ahead: Chevrolet Volt ads show GM's direction down road
    Detroit Free Press, Sept. 15

But General Motors Corp. is pitching the Chevrolet Volt in TV ads, on the sides of buildings, in print and on AM radio.

The ads are part of a larger campaign to tell consumers about GM's efforts to improve the fuel economy of its lineup, including hybrid versions of the Malibu and Tahoe, its models that get more than 30 miles per gallon and upcoming fuel cell projects.

2007 NADA Washington, D.C. Conference

The focus of this year’s NADA Washington D.C. Conference was loud and clear: the industry is in a state of transition. To what extent remains to be seen in the upcoming year, but be assured significant changes will transform the auto marketplace.

NEW SAFETY LABELS NOW REQUIRED

As of Sept.1, vehicle manufacturers were required to include National Highway Traffic Safety Administration New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) safety ratings on automobile Monroney labels. By law, automobiles include passenger cars and vans, station wagons, sport-utility vehicles, crossovers, and small buses under 10,000 lb. gross vehicle weight rating. Because NCAP assigns star ratings based on test performance, the new safety information label is known as “star for cars” and features a one to five-star graphic display.

NHTSA conducts NCAP testing on a rolling basis throughout the model year, but does not test all models and doesn’t always conduct all tests for each model.  Manufacturers are required to add safety label information to Monroney labels within 30 days of receiving NCAP test results. NHTSA offers an explanatory brochure titled Coming to a Window Sticker Near You… It includes sample labels and can be used to help consumers understand the new safety information. The new labels reference www.safercar.gov and NHTSA’s hotline.

NHTSA also requires dealerships that alter covered vehicles to attach a second label adjacent to the Monroney label stating that the vehicle has been altered. Changes made to used vehicles are not subject to alteration labeling.
